Feeder-cam distress

October 14, 1997.

I started documenting "observations from another perspective" several years ago, with the hopes of making it available on the web. While the web site is still in development, disturbing pictures have emerged from test runs of the feeder-cam. Located near Deer Lake in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada, Earth, these observations of daily visitors (Figure 1) troubled me as I watched their condition deteriorate (you don't want to see this!).

Despite the disfigurements and near inability to eat (Figure 2) they survived. The growths and tumors became apparent in more and more "groupings" culminating with "the finch with two beaks" (Figure 3). The growths and tumors grew to the point of incapacitating the birds. While operating the feeder-cam was troubling, from the video I extracted 3 photos (below) representative of some of the many "ill" birds (at an early stage).

I am looking for some insight as to what might be happening.

As mysteriously as they appeared, lingured, so they have gone. Looking at the feeder over the last week, most birds seem healthy and strong with the occasional bird with foot "tumors" (generally smallish but history has shown that these malformations grow). Incidents seem to be lessening.

The flow of birds continues ... Concerned, J.
